Reds have been my “go to” beer since I discovered Boont Amber in 1992. But there haven't been a lot of choices. Now new reds are appearing all over the place.
This Pizza Port Shark Bite, from Carlsbad, California, is an excellent example of the newcomers. Hoppy all the way through like an West Coast IPA, but malty and roasted, with not too much of either, a real bite and very little sweetness. Holds its own against by category favorite, Federation Utopia Planitia. I'm thinking I need to put these new American Reds into a different category; Boont Amber, Smithwicks, and O'hara's Red are all outstanding ales, but with a lot less bite.
