SelfAwarePatterns
Marrow and The Well of Stars

A few weeks ago, I talked about Robert Reed’s story collection, The Greatship. It’s about a spherical Uranus-sized megastructure moving through space at a third the speed of light. Humans manage to reach it first and claim it, and then decide to take it on a tour of the galaxy, offering passage to anyone who can rendezvous and offer payment of some kind.

This is a universe without FTL, but most advanced species are immortal, so the long travel times are not a barrier. Although interstellar travel remains a dangerous endeavor. And reaching and matching speeds with the Greatship presents special challenges. Nonetheless, a large community of disparate alien species end up settling in the ship’s vast caverns and passages.

Marrow is a novel that takes place in this universe, and actually features many of the same characters from The Greatship stories, taking place after all but the last story in that collection. It turns out that the core of the Greatship is hollow, with what appears to be a planet at the center, held in place by buttressing force fields of some kind. The planet gets the name “Marrow”.

Several of the top-tier captains, the leaders who run the Greatship, are given orders to go into hiding and then meet at a secret location. There, they are told about Marrow and ordered to go down and explore it. However, things fall apart when Marrow reveals its instability, and they become stranded, with no means of communication with anyone on the outer ship.

Years pass without rescue, and the captains begin to wonder if anyone is still alive on the ship outside of Marrow. They determine that their only option to get back to the outer ship is to have children and build a civilization on the planet to build the necessary infrastructure. However, things get complicated when their descendants form a new religion, one with very different goals from their still living ancestors.

I found the first half of Marrow to be a bit tedious, but the story picks up in the second half and becomes pretty good.

The Well of Stars is a sequel. The events of Marrow leave the Greatship off course, on a heading that will eventually take it outside the galaxy, with no good way to make a major change in direction. The ship at this point is far from human space. Many would like to evacuate, but the charity of many of the local civilizations in the region appears to be dubious, and the captains are leery of allowing a large exodus of available starships.

But before leaving the galaxy, the Greatship will first have to pass through a very dark nebula, dubbed the Ink Well. The civilizations around the Ink Well know it is inhabited, but have a range of conflicting stories about the entities that live there, which call themselves the polyponds. The initial signals from the polyponds seem friendly, but there are signs that things are more sinister. Star systems whose galactic orbits have taken them through the Ink Well seem to be stripped when they come out. At least one entire civilization seems to have disappeared.

The novel brings back one of my favorite characters from the story collection, the woman Mere. Mere is a human who, due to a starship catastrophe, began life in utter isolation and then spent millennia on an alien world, only eventually taking on humanity as a second learned culture. She has become an expert in studying and assessing alien species. She is sent on a secret mission to learn what she can about the polyponds. Before her mission is over, she learns her story and theirs have things in common.

In these books, we learn more about the nature of human immortality in this future. It becomes clear that the characters are essentially beings composed of nanomachinery, and engineered to be in the shape of original humanity. One character, thinking about this, notes that every species that reaches this stage seems to stick to its ancestral form.

A frequent criticism I’ve seen of these books is that they don’t adequately explore how people who’ve lived for thousands of years would be different. I don’t know that this is entirely fair since the characters are different, with the boundaries between them and their technology pretty hazy. And anyway, by what standards do we judge Reed’s guess? But one answer he seems to allude to is that they’ve engineered themselves to not be too different.

As I noted in The Greatship post, there’s no talk of mind copying. Even the AI residents on the Greatship aren’t able to evacuate themselves by transmission. It’s noted that while the AIs can take up far less space in starships, they still need them to leave. Overall, Reed appears to adhere to a mind/brain identity theory in these stories, with a possible gesture toward quantum physics as justification. Which, plausibility questions aside, does serve to maintain more jeopardy for the characters.

These books are brimming with ideas and worldbuilding, including several theories about what the Greatship is, where it came from, whether something is pursuing it, and many other notions. But while ideas are Reed’s forte, and I’m able to recommend these books because of it, that recommendation has to come with a couple of important caveats.

First, I find that Reed’s writing can be tedious and frustrating at times. He tends to go on lengthy infodumps, often in the middle of a conversation. And I frequently struggle to get a clear picture of what’s happening. Based on the reviews I’ve read, I’m not alone. If you’re only looking for a good story, your mileage with these books may vary. And from what I’ve seen of his later self-published material, he’s doubled down on this style.

Second, Reed has gone back and edited many older stories to fit with his new ideas about where the series is going. But Marrow and The Well of Stars were published through Tor, so he hasn’t been able to change them, which means they have inconsistencies with the rest of the series. In particular, the first half of Marrow was originally a novella, which Reed revised and published as “Marrow Redux,” where he makes some pretty significant changes to the story. Overall, Reed’s stance toward the novels is “close to the actual events, but only that.”

So these books are something of a mixed bag for me. They’re good enough that I’m going to keep on reading at least parts of the series, but anyone taking them up should know what they’re getting into.

If you’ve read these books, I’d love to know what you think. Or see any recommendations for material with similar themes.

#bookReview #bookReviews #bookReview #bookReviews #books #sciFi #sciFi #ScienceFiction #SciFi #SpaceOpera

Solar Phasing
"Space Drift" by Solar Phasing is a cinematic science fiction soundtrack, conceived as a slow and immersive space odyssey.

The title suggests a slow drift through space, like a ship floating among the stars.
