#conversations

Unpopular opinion: There is not the One #Messenger To Rule Them All. It depends on individual #chat requirements.

Extremely easy to onboard and use, but only for Android and iOS: #Quicksy or #Prav.

For Joan & John Average: #Conversations, #Dino, or #Monal.

For team chat: #Gajim or #Prose.

For people with higher security necessities: #Conversations or #Dino, but with self-hosted server and/or use over #TOR.

Tbc.

Of course, there are many other valid options. Whatever floats your boat.

AFAIK, #Conversations offers domain hosting on their #ejabberd. I.e. they could (in theory) grab all your metadata, sell it, and send you daily reminders to buy #MobileCoin from them. However, as you own your domain, you could export your data ("XEP-0227: Portable Import/Export Format for XMPP-IM Servers") and move elsewhere. Also, Conversations is hosted in the #EU, i.e. #GDPR applies until #FriedrichMerz kills it.

a few notes on a Linda Rising's talk

"Realize up front that this is hard".

Cognitive dissonance: contradictory "evidence" causes severe cognitive discomfort.

* We are not rational decision-makers
* but we are good at explaining after-the-fact why we made a decision – a pattern called rationalization.

Two thirds of people will not consider an idea until "somebody they know pretty well, is doing it, is happy with it, talks about it […] so maybe i might think about it".
To convince,
* you must address: "What's in it for me?" – requires empathy;
* you can use the values of your opponent. (Loyalty or fairness?)

A pattern of personal touch: walk a mile in the other's shoes
Another pattern: "Give it a try"
Another pattern: listen
Another pattern: ask for something personal

@vort3 @ravi Basically you only need to tell your contacts 'Install #Prav', they will know the rest of the drill from their #WhatsApp experience to start chatting with you. Now try the same with #Conversations. They will hestate to pay to install Conversations. Either you have to convince them it is worth the money or explain about #Fdroid. Try this experiment with 10 of your friends after you setup Prav account. Please share your experience.

I deleted all other Messenger and I switched to XMPP-only-mode (and IRC).
My family is using dino and #conversations. It"s our main messenger for our family. This is a good starting point and step-by-step more people are joining.

When I read posts like yours, I always see how lucky I am that I don't have it that way. I had theoretically an xmpp account before but only really started after android phones became mainstream here, but before everyone had whatsapp on them.

Then I setup an xmpp server and me and my brother installed xmpp clients on the devices of my family.
We're using it ever since, it only became better and better since the dawn of the #conversations client.
I guess the window to do this easy without much resistance was quite small in retorespect. People don't like change messangers.

Was having issues with #Signal notifications again, so I set my mom up with #Quicksy #XMPP as a backup messenger in case she can't get hold of me on Signal. I'm still using #Conversations, but talking her thru setting up Quicksy was straight forward and simple.

I'll probably go down and set up #Dino on her desktop PC sometime tomorrow so she has something she can use on her PC.

Thanks to @daniel for all his hard work on both Conversations, Quicksy and XMPP, 🙂

I recently developed a thing to turn a Conversations chat* into a PDF.

codeberg.org/moji/typst-conver

That story began with a friend of mine that had got a XMPP group chat where they shared updates and pictures of their latest travel adventure. Now chat is rather ephemeral and they wanted to preserve those memories in an easy accessible format that is PDF. And so I put something together.

* actually any chat as long as you can get the raw data in the expected format

Codeberg.orgtypst-conversationsA parametrized Typst document to visualize a chat conversation with text and image messages — closely matching the design of Conversations.

#Conversations #xmpp users: I have a personal prosody xmpp server via #strato dyndns. since i reinstalled it a few days ago i have massive #connection problems. my main smartphone says "server not found", but with a browser can connect to the same hostname without a #problem . #thunderbird on a different device also have in the same network doesn't have any connection problems at all.
Edit: solved -> crappy AVM fritzbox doesn't do NAT on IPv6 x.x

@tk My #prosody 0.12.5 server also can't do reactions in chatrooms - #XMPP clients are #Conversations and #Gajim. There is a claim that Prosody supports XEP-0421 here:
prosody.im/doc/xeplist
...ever since 0.12, but it's not enabled/installed by default, as stock-installed on #Debian 12 (from the backport for 0.12.5).

Note: XEP-0421 is absent from this page:

Öh, ich bin gerade am Rätseln mit #conversations: Auf meinem Server kann ich Anhänge bis 40MB per http-upload verschicken. Conversations dampft aber alles größere (Bild) ein. Schaltet man das aus, verschickt es nicht mehr per http-upload, sondren direkt. Gibts dazu irgendwo ne Einstellung?
(Mit meinem Jolla habe ich gerade ein 9,8MB-MP3 per http-upload verschickt, was mit Conversations nicht geht)
