@jbz >It was Intel grant money, Patterson happily admits, that paid for the Berkeley architects to invent RISC-V in the first place. Without closed source, proprietary Big Tech, there’s no open source, free-for-all Little Tech. Don’t listen to the techno-hippies who claim otherwise; that’s always been the case.

Perhaps. But it doesn't *have* to be that way :) There are alternatives to finance capital. And even it traces much of its sustenance to generous state backing, something China seems to have learned and that the USA seems to have forgotten (if the anemic CHIPS act in the US is anything to go by).

Apparently, Intel-CPUs are no longer a factor for certain applications. Instead, Apple chips are increasingly being adopted, even in datacenters. I think it's just a matter of time until Apple starts producing server hardware again. It would also make sense for Apple to finally offer official support for Linux Kernel development on their hardware.

These #Radian Memory Systems drives are fascinating - the block diagram suggests DDR3 I/O performance, over PCIe Gen3 x8, but with "power-loss-protection", and persistent storage 👀 👉 radianmemory.com/nvram-acceler

These might actually be a reasonable replacement for #Intel #Micron #3DXpoint / #Optane.

Only 8 or 16GB of capacity, though.

@knoppix95 this is nothing new.

#Lenovo almost always offered around €125 discount for "no operating system" and €100 for #UbuntuLTS over #Windows - if they offer any of those options at all

What is a problem is that Lenovo doesn't actually #Support even "#Ubuntu #certified" devices like the #P15v and it's #Intel #XMM7360-based #WWAN chip, the #Fibocom #850GL, at all, and they refuse to provide #drivers for it!
