Very much a hands off approach this year so far. We are having one of our (if not the) driest springs ever but the flowering perennials are doing great. #Allotment #GrowYourOwn #Permaculture #NoDig #PollinatorPlants #Mulch

Mit dem ersten Grasschnitt mach ich die Wege zwischen den Beeten schön.
Hat auch den Vorteil, dass man sich immer eine Handvoll Mulch für die Beete nehmen kann.
Helpful website discussing pH of pine needle mulch. It does not make soil acidic. #mulch #gardening #weeds #allotment #garden #soil #dirt #blueberries #pine https://www.wineboxgardener.com/home/2016/5/29/pine-needle-mulch-for-blueberries
I'm using pine needles for paths at the community garden. Free, but I also love the look, the smell, and even the crunch they make as you walk on them. Reminds me of my grandmother's garden in Mattapoisett, MA. #peas #garden #gardening #allotment #pine #mulch #pinus
I splurged on a pair of garden trugs so I can transport compost to my plot at the community garden. I really like how they have handholds *and* rope loops. Supposedly UV stable so I don't have to buy new ones every few years. #garden #gardening #compost #mulch
Long weekend gardening plans or a vengeful prank?? #Mulch #MulchPile #HolySaturday #Perth #Boorloo #Djeran
So what are people's thoughts on using wood chips for weed suppression? I've heard that fungal decomposition sucks nitrogen from the surrounding soil, plus the nooks and crannies can provide ideal habitat for plant-nibbling pillbugs. (This is not my plot.) #CommunityGarden #garden #gardening #weeds #mulch #fungi #woodchips #nitrogen #pillbugs #woodlice #allotment
The mustard green manure in the allotment greenhouse has been doing well in the spring sunshine. #NoDig #Mulch #GrowYourOwn #Gardening #Allotment
Sawdust is an excellent mulch! Apply a 2.5 cm (1 in) layer on moist soil to reduce evaporation, retain moisture, and suppress annual weeds. It also prevents weed seeds from germinating. Just ensure it’s well-aged or add nitrogen to prevent nutrient deficiency in the short term. #GardeningTips #Mulch
Plot progress. The front half is almost ready for sowing and planting up from next month onwards.
A Jostaberry now occupies the space the mass of wild brambles used to.

Mulching down. It’s dirty work. I’d love to hire someone, but I’ve only had one person do it right, and Mario is 960 miles away
Jacob is moving piles along the slope and I’m doing.
How to do it wrong? Blanket mulching that touches the trunk or covers exposed root base. The mulch holds moisture (this is good), but causes the plant to rot where it touches.
Thick #mulch can become a water barrier, starving the plant. And while it’s a great weed retardant, it also blocks emerging wildflower seeds and bulbs.
Worst mulch EVER is this bizarre “volcano” trend where people build up a 3’ cinder cone around tree trunks. Sometimes with ROCKS
Quality material is important. The goal is to provide something that slowly breaks down and feeds the soil. I’d prefer not buying mulch due to potential microplastic and weed contamination, but it’s more important to stop the field grass from choking out saplings.
Things that should never touch your soil: landscape fabric (plastic), painted or treated wood chips, and used tires. Bonus points for painted uses tires
Thick plastic sheeting breaks down, too. And the plot owners at my community garden rarely bother to pick up the hundreds of little pieces that are left ... because they cover it all up with a fresh layer of plastic. #garden #gardening #plastic #mulch #weeds #vegetables
If anyone is considering polypropylene landscaping fabric for their vegetable garden, here's a visual of what happens. After just one season it begins to disintegrate, and shreds will be blown onto neighboring plots where they'll continue to break down into ever smaller pieces of plastic. #garden #gardening #weeds #weeding #plastic #mulch #microplastics #CommunityGarden #VegetableGardening

Allgemeine Tipps:
A little more progress on the plot. The hedge clearings have been moved and added to a hűgel bed nearer the shed.
Another no dig bed is in the process of being made in its place, just in front of the wild brambles. #NoDig #Mulch #GrowYourOwn #Allotment #Gardening
Saw it in the wild today, so here's your annual reminder that volcano mulching is baddddd.... lay it out like a leaf layer in the woods.
Mounding increases the chances of root binding and rot forming from moisture on areas that aren't usually kept wet.
