@SeanAloysiusOBrien "During the cold war, the anticommunist ideological framework could transform any data about existing communist societies into hostile evidence. If the Soviets refused to negotiate a point, they were intransigent and belligerent; if they appeared willing to make concessions, this was but a skillful ploy to put us off our guard. By opposing arms limitations, they would have demonstrated their aggressive intent; but when in fact they supported most armament treaties, it was because they were mendacious and manipulative. If the churches in the USSR were empty, this demonstrated that religion was suppressed; but if the churches were full, this meant the people were rejecting the regime's atheistic ideology. If the workers went on strike (as happened on infrequent occasions), this was evidence of their alienation from the collectivist system; if they didn't go on strike, this was because they were intimidated and lacked freedom. A scarcity of consumer goods demonstrated the failure of the economic system; an improvement in consumer supplies meant only that the leaders were attempting to placate a restive population and so maintain a firmer hold over them.

If communists in the United States played an important role struggling for the rights of workers, the poor, African-Americans, women, and others, this was only their guileful way of gathering support among disfranchised groups and gaining power for themselves. How one gained power by fighting for the rights of powerless groups was never explained. What we are dealing with is a nonfalsifiable orthodoxy, so assiduously marketed by the ruling interests that it affected people across the entire political spectrum."

„Manufacturing Consent in Germany is a collection of freely accessible materials that provide a structural understanding of the increasingly repressive climate within Germany. Central to this is the nationalized politics of Holocaust remembrance, which has been effectively instrumentalized, as is clear from the various articles, lectures, press releases, and podcasts, by the right-wing in Germany.”

Müsste man mal nachlesen.

Also eine paradoxe Situation.

"With the development of industrial capitalism, a new and unanticipated system of injustice, it is libertarian socialism that has preserved and extended the radical humanist message of the Enlightenment and the classical liberal ideals that were perverted into an ideology to sustain the emerging social order."

Thanks to @anarchistquotes
#chomsky a particular favourite of mine. Tells it like it is. ✊ n.b. the phrasing.

"The responsibility of intellectuals is to speak the truth and expose lies."

–Noam Chomsky

#Chomsky emphasizes that those who have knowledge and influence must use their intellect to challenge falsehoods and reveal the truth. Intellectuals, whether scholars, journalists, or thinkers, have a duty to question power structures and educate the public. Silence in the face of deception allows misinformation to spread unchecked.

given how #chomsky in this video talks about "the limiting effects of coercive institutions," i think it is only fair to point out how he openly supports coercion institutions inflicting violence on non-humans.

i also just think it's absurd with self-described anarchist intellectual not having the time to even think about who he is oppressing.

too many self-described #anarchists become #fascists as soon as they're asked about other animals, peter gelderloos being a prime example. they need to be called out.

"If we choose to take seriously the overwhelming consensus position of credible climate scientists, we have to accept that climate change represents a truly existential threat to the continuation of life on Earth as we know it.

Given this reality, it is not the least bit surprising that Noam Chomsky has been committed to educating the broadest possible global audience on the basic science behind the climate crisis, the factors that have produced the crisis, and how to advance a viable path forward for reversing the crisis.

It is also not surprising that Chomsky understands the crisis as a severe malignancy of contemporary neoliberal capitalism and that, correspondingly, the work of reversing the crisis will require mass popular mobilization to defeat neoliberalism under the combined banners of social justice and ecological sanity.

Of course, Chomsky’s profoundly impactful research contributions, spanning over seven decades, have primarily covered the fields of linguistics, philosophy, psychology, and cognitive science. He has never claimed to be an expert on the technical details of climate science or the economics of building an alternative clean energy system.

At the same time, Chomsky, legendarily, is a man who “reads everything.” And he does not merely read everything. Rather, over decades, Chomsky has demonstrated a breathtaking ability to absorb a huge range of material on critically important social and political issues. He is then equally capable of explaining these issues to millions of readers throughout the world through his unparalleled combination of moral passion, rigor, depth of insight, clarity, as well as — when he chooses to unleash it — bracing rhetoric force.

These are exactly the qualities that Chomsky has brought to bear in addressing the climate crisis. His contributions are critical for understanding the crisis..."

jacobin.comNoam Chomsky and the Socialist Alternative to Climate ChaosNoam Chomsky’s best-known political contribution is his powerful, long-running critique of US foreign policy. But Chomsky has also used his global platform to sound the alarm about the climate crisis and chart a path away from disaster.
Cold War Canada: Ongoing state support for East European émigré groups with deep fascist roots
“Manufacturing Consent”
… for fascism

“If the triumph of communism
is the worst imaginable result,
the support of fascism abroad
is justified as a lesser evil.”

In 1988, just before the destruction of the USSR, #Herman and #Chomsky published a theory on the use of mass media “to inculcate individuals with the values, beliefs, and codes of behavior” that “integrate them into the institutional structures of the larger society.” (p.1.) The media’s “societal purpose,” they explained, is to “defend the economic, social, and political agenda of privileged groups that dominate the domestic society and the state.” (p.298.)

This propaganda model focused on five thematic “filters” of the mass media:

    size, concentrated ownership, owner wealth and profit orientation…;
    advertising as primary income source …;
    reliance… on info. provided by government, business and “experts” funded and approved by these primary sources and agents of power;
    “flak” as a means of disciplining the media;
    “anticommunism” as a national religion and control mechanism. (p.2.)

With the “specter” of communism as “the ultimate evil,” the media created a “cultural milieu in which anticommunism is the dominant religion.” By “elevating opposition to communism to a first principle of Western ideology and politics,” the media used it as a “potent” “political-control mechanism.” This “fragment[ed] the left and labor movements” and sidelined “social democrats” accused of being “too soft on communists.” While many Cold War “liberal” progressives supported US-led wars justified with anticommunist pretexts, “others lapsed into silence, paralyzed by the fear of being tarred with charges of infidelity to the national religion.” (p.29.)

By stirring “anti-Communist fervor … the demand for serious evidence in support of claims of ‘communist’ abuses is suspended, and charlatans can survive as evidential sources.” These “charlatans” take “center stage” as media “experts” and “remain there even after exposure as highly unreliable, if not downright liars.” (p.30.)
