Found these old photos from 2013 of mostly Shetland and a bit of St Andrews, Scotland. Reminiscing.
"I leave the radio on all night …”
Friends, I'm looking for more songs about leaving the #TV or #radio on overnight to ward off #loneliness.
I have a few on-hand, which I'll share. The first comes from Mark Snarski's 90s band The Jackson Code with "Bring yourself home to me" - as covered by Jimmy Little some years later. It's a bit hard to find online, but here's someone's YouTube upload of it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EMtjsqD_qI0
What have you got? Please share!
Martian Memories
Opportunity captures a mini-mesa named Jean Baptiste La Jeunesse. It was named after a member of the Corps of Discovery commissioned by President Thomas Jefferson in 1803 to explore lands of the Louisiana Purchase.

Good morning.

“Wastin’ away again in Margaritaville, Searchin’ for my lost shaker of salt. Some people claim that there’s a woman to blame, But I know it’s my own damn fault.” —Jimmy Buffett
This morning, Margaritaville is playing on loop in my head. I’m not sure why—it just happens sometimes. It’s one of the enduring greats of the 20th century, a song that takes me back to the good ole days… or the bad ole days, depending on perspective. And perspective, well—it shifts moment to moment.
What’s strange is that I wasn’t thinking of anything in particular. The song just started playing—unprompted—and it’s still going. But only that one part, repeating like a record caught on a scratch. I can almost see a jukebox in an empty diner, flickering to life, selecting a 45-rpm from the carousel, and setting it gently on the platter.
“Those were the days, my friend, we thought they’d never end, We’d sing and dance forever and a day…” —Mary Hopkin
The record’s changed now. Those Were the Days has taken over, sung by Mary Hopkin in the 1960s. The melody, though, traces back to Russian composer Boris Fomin in the 1920s. Gene Raskin wrote the English lyrics that gave it new life. Just a bit of trivia I felt compelled to include, since the lyrics surfaced.
And now, the needle moves again.
“A long, long time ago, I can still remember how that music used to make me smile…” —Don McLean
That’s an interesting choice. Believe it or not, the first time I heard American Pie by Don McLean, I was boarding a plane in California—headed overseas for the first time. It was December 1971 or January 1972. My second life had just begun.
“Bye, bye Miss American Pie, Drove my Chevy to the levee but the levee was dry…” —Don McLean

Epigenetic Switch to Turn Memories On and Off Created
https://neurosciencenews.com/epigenetic-switch-memory-29874/

I used to be a regular for lunch at Wakamatsu in Hayward. I took a photo of this beautiful green tea cup on my last lunch before the COVID lockdown. I did a Copic marker sketch from the photo during the lockdown. I am slowly redrawing all of those sketches in Procreate. Wakamatsu has since closed because the owners wanted to retire, so this redraw has even more meaning for me.
The redraw took just over an hour.
Today was the 7th anniversary of my beloved Akita, Kanta. The first photo is of him just before we made the one-way visit to the vet, and the second is of Drake, lying in Kanta's huge bed alone when I came home without Kanta. I miss you both.
Last week, we celebrated 20 years of ZeMKI In this video, our researchers look back and share their favorite memories from two decades of collaboration, discovery, and community.
Thank you to everyone who has been part of this incredible journey.
After many decades of not finding a Round Tuit, I shall see Merzbow live in the new year! Once upon a very long time ago, I named a SunFire 280R “Merzbow” in honour of him. I can still remember hearing an ex-colleague tell me, years later, “we just turned off a server called … merz … _merzbow_ ? Was that one of yours?” Of course it was.
