Esther Plomp<p>Some thoughts on the <a href="https://scholar.social/tags/Munin2023" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Munin2023</span></a> panel: </p><p>- projects should have earmarked funding for science communication <br>- no short-term contracts! <br>- institutes need to ask directly about what researchers are doing in terms of reaching out to society + researchers need to be supported by the institute in order to speak out.</p><p>Also how are we talking about academic freedom and not highlighting the most recent example at eLife.. </p><p>Thanks to the organisers for another great conference and the stream!</p>
Esther Plomp<p>Interesting survey by Jimi Thaule and Tora Rundhovde at <a href="https://scholar.social/tags/Munin2023" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Munin2023</span></a> on the knowledge that PhD candidates have about the publication process. </p><p>There is little systematic instruction in publication ethics and the process, and people know little about copyright. </p><p>Copyright also remains most illusive to PhD candidates at my faculty - even though this has such an impact of retaining some control over your research and its outputs...</p>
Esther Plomp<p>Rita Campos is highlighting at <a href="https://scholar.social/tags/Munin2023" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Munin2023</span></a> that we already see between scientists that we are not speaking the same language as colleagues: some things that have a meaning in the natural sciences does not resonate with the social sciences and humanities. </p><p>This communication problem in science can be worse if you take it to society. How can we enforce this dialogue? Working with schools provides a pathway forward!</p>
Esther Plomp<p>Discussing the relations between art and science at <a href="https://scholar.social/tags/Munin2023" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Munin2023</span></a>: </p><p>- Need more long term funding to involve artists in science<br>- Artist and scientists are much a like: it takes rigor, creativity, it takes time to get to the top, they like to share what they do. There are a lot of commonalities!</p>
Andreas Klein, PhD<p>What a tour de force by <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://astrodon.social/@herve_dole" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>herve_dole</span></a></span> sharing numerous exciting, and above all, transferable outreach concepts for the scientific community! So much to learn about how we connect science and society. Esther Plomp<p>And the third day of <a href="https://scholar.social/tags/Munin2023" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Munin2023</span></a> kicks off with a presentation on Science &amp; Society by Hervé Dole. </p><p>He is asking whether <a href="https://scholar.social/tags/OpenAccess" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OpenAccess</span></a> to science is enough to bring it to society. </p><p>And point out that doing science communication in the evening is not sustainable..</p><p>It needs to become more sustainable and easy to do as science &amp; society is the third mission of universities (next to teaching/research). </p><p><a href="https://scholar.social/tags/OpenScience" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OpenScience</span></a></p>

Esther Plomp<p>Lots of mentions about sustainability for <a href="https://scholar.social/tags/ScholComm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ScholComm</span></a> and infrastructures at <a href="https://scholar.social/tags/Munin2023" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Munin2023</span></a>. Also in the presentation from Iva Melinščak Zlodi on the DIAMAS project (<a href="https://diamasproject.eu/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">diamasproject.eu/</span><span class="invisible"></span></a>). </p><p>(there were also some other presentations but there's competing interests from my inbox today :()</p>
Esther Plomp<p><a href="https://scholar.social/tags/Munin2023" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Munin2023</span></a> continues with a discussion of how PIDs (persistent identifiers) can help to measure the uptake of <a href="https://scholar.social/tags/OpenScience" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OpenScience</span></a>. The work by the OPUS project was also highlighted: <a href="https://opusproject.eu/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">opusproject.eu/</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p><p>We shouldn't just aim to count things that are easy to count though, as this will replicate our current incentive structure. Toby Steiner<p>Next up is Iva Melinščak Zlodi (University of Zagreb) presenting on the "many faces of sustaining <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/openaccess" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>openaccess</span></a> publishing", and drawing on the work currently being done under the remit of <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/DIAMAS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>DIAMAS</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/Munin2023" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Munin2023</span></a> </p><p>Interesting introductory questions explored around what we mean by " sustainability"</p>

Esther Plomp<p>And today we're kicking off with another fantastic keynote at <a href="https://scholar.social/tags/Munin2023" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Munin2023</span></a> by Yensi Flores Bueso on Transforming Research Assessment for an Equitable Scientific Culture (or an introduction to COARA: <a href="https://coara.eu/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">coara.eu/</span><span class="invisible"></span></a>). What a force of nature this researcher is, managing to succeed in <a href="https://scholar.social/tags/Academia" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Academia</span></a> when all the odds are against you. Hopefully these odds will change in the future with the assessment culture changing..</p><p><a href="https://scholar.social/tags/ResearchAssessment" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ResearchAssessment</span></a></p>
Esther Plomp<p><a href="https://scholar.social/tags/Munin2023" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Munin2023</span></a> I forgot to toot about the Dryad data repository presentation yesterday (<a href="https://datadryad.org/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">datadryad.org/</span><span class="invisible"></span></a>). Such beautiful artwork on the slides with the tree! I can relate to the struggles of ensuring proper data curation but also making those services accessible to all individuals involved in research. We had similar discussions about IsoArcH (<a href="https://isoarch.eu" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">isoarch.eu</span><span class="invisible"></span></a>) last week (which does provide free open access to the publicly available data). </p><p><a href="https://scholar.social/tags/OpenData" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OpenData</span></a> <a href="https://scholar.social/tags/RDM" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RDM</span></a></p>
