Mika<p>I think the next thing I plan to tackle is <a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/HomeAssistant" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#HomeAssistant</a><span> - most of my smart devices are now communicating on WiFi, and controlled using multiple proprietary apps.<br><br>I plan to deploy HA using </span><a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/Docker" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Docker</a> (so it's portable and easy to contain) - either on a <a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/RaspberryPi" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#RaspberryPi</a>, or on my <a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/Proxmox" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Proxmox</a> <a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/homelab" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#homelab</a> server (perhaps on an <a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/LXC" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#LXC</a><span> container, assuming that's possible).<br><br>I also plan to replace some of these smart (WiFi) devices with </span><a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/Zigbee" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Zigbee</a> devices - I'm a commmmmpleeeeete noob when it comes to <a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/SmartHome" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#SmartHome</a> stuffs, but I think that's the recommended way of doing things...? There's a lot of talk about <a href="https://sakurajima.social/tags/Matter" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Matter</a><span> too from my search, no idea really what these jargons are.<br><br>Anyway, I just wanna grasp the concept first - assuming I deploy HA as planned i.e. on Pi 4 or LXC container (or VM), what is it that I need to purchase to make it work (i.e. be able to add these Zigbee or Matter-compatible home devices/appliances)? cos I assume the platform I'm hosting HA on would need some sort of hardware to be compatible with any of them that aren't communicating merely through WiFi/LAN?</span></p>
kaiserkiwi :kiwibird:<p>I'm in the process of switching from <a href="https://corteximplant.com/tags/ZHA" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ZHA</span></a> to <a href="https://corteximplant.com/tags/Zigbee2MQTT" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Zigbee2MQTT</span></a> and I'm really impressed by how much better everything is.</p><p>I know many people say this for a while, but after years of ZHA it's surprising what I've missed. Especially for some devices that exposed much less entities to Home Assistant via ZHA. </p><p>Suddenly I have so much more data about my home that I can not only see but also use for automations. Suddenly I can control stuff about some devices that were never available via ZHA. </p><p>I'm glad that I'm also switching the Coordinator in this process as it costs an unexpected amount of time to do this, as I have to update automations, the dashboards etc. <br>But in this process I can clean up so much stuff I did wrong in the last months and years.</p><p><a href="https://corteximplant.com/tags/HomeAssistant" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HomeAssistant</span></a> <a href="https://corteximplant.com/tags/Zigbee" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Zigbee</span></a> <a href="https://corteximplant.com/tags/Z2M" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Z2M</span></a></p>
BedastGPT<p>After some testing and usage of these Sonoff and Thirdreality temperature sensors, while the Thirdreality sensor was more fiddly to get running, it seems to work a bit better, is a bit more responsive to changes, and is actually configurable.</p><p>So far, I'm leaning heavily towards standardizing on the Thirdreality sensor.</p><p><a href="https://beige.party/tags/Zigbee" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Zigbee</span></a> <a href="https://beige.party/tags/Sonoff" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Sonoff</span></a> <a href="https://beige.party/tags/Thirdreality" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Thirdreality</span></a> <a href="https://beige.party/tags/IoT" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>IoT</span></a></p>
BedastGPT<p>I'd been using a Centralite Zigbee temperature and humidity sensor for monitoring outdoor climate stuff at my home. I wanted to put one inside the box with my Meshtastic node and batteries, but this sensor isn't available anymore, it seems.</p><p>So I bought 2 other brands I've used: Thirdreality and Sonoff. They have both been fairly solid for me.</p><p>Sonoff is more compact and uses a magnetic mount to make battery changes and whatnot easier, but it uses a coin cell battery of a size that is different from every other device I have. This makes something like 5 different coin cells I would now have to keep track of. It's larger than a 2032 and it should last longer, sure. But these oddball sizes like 2477 are more difficult to find and often WAY more expensive.</p><p>I got some Thirdreality door sensors to replace some failing ones that also used an oddball coin cell size, but these new ones use AAA batteries. Sure, the sensors are a little larger, but that doesn't bother me. AAA batteries are easy to get, cheap, and should last longer than these coin cells. So I was pleased to see their temp sensor also used AAA batteries.</p><p>The Sonoff joined my zigbee network easily and started working pretty quickly. However, zigbee2mqtt had trouble interviewing the Thirdreality sensor. This is the first Thirdreality device I've had trouble with. I did manage to get it to complete an interview. Thankfully, just retrying the interview a couple of times got it fully functional.</p><p>I'm going to put both of them in the box and evaluate them. I might replace my Centralite sensor with whichever one I end up liking most. I really like the idea of switching as much as possible to sensors that use more standard batteries, though. Hopefully Thirdreality pushes a firmware that makes these work better. In my experience, they do maintain their firmwares rather than fire and forget.</p><p>It's kinda interesting my Zigbee devices seem to be coalescing on just a small number of brands (Philips, Thirdreality, Sonoff, possibly Sengled, seeming to move away from Centralite).</p><p><a href="https://beige.party/tags/Zigbee" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Zigbee</span></a> <a href="https://beige.party/tags/zigbee2mqtt" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>zigbee2mqtt</span></a> <a href="https://beige.party/tags/Centralite" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Centralite</span></a> <a href="https://beige.party/tags/Sonoff" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Sonoff</span></a> <a href="https://beige.party/tags/Thirdreality" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Thirdreality</span></a> <a href="https://beige.party/tags/IoT" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>IoT</span></a></p>
