The prototype #TRON identity disc is looking better than I had hoped. I think once I get some aluminum tape to cover the inside, we'll get more consistent light transmission from the ring out through the outer ring.
I goofed on one thing though. Since this is eye-searingly bright on 5V, I thought I can just use 3 rechargeable AA batteries in series, give it 4.5V, and get a marginally less-bright light, which would be a very easy solution. Only there isn't enough room in here for AA batteries, or at least it will be VERY cramped. And pretty heavy for the little. Whoops. An obvious boo-boo, in hindsight. Fortunately it seems like AAAs, with the same voltage, will fit just fine. I'll start laying that out tonight.
Also, this makes a pretty nice light feature when it's plugged into USB! And a very pleasant night-light for the little as well. I think after the Halloween push is over, I'll make a couple for myself that are meant to be lamps or light features. One black one, and the white disc from TRON: Uprising.
I was planning to have just an on/off button right now but I might go ahead and model buttons for all four controls on the scavenged ring light control board (on/off, cycle colour temp, brightness up, brightness down).
Moving in the right direction. I didn't have time to try cutting & rewiring the EL tape and panels. Maybe Thursday I'll have the time to sit and dedicate some time to it.
