There are a lot of changes coming to the @jellyfin for Android TV app! 🚀 While a lot of them are not directly visible (like improved code quality and refactorings) some of them are.

The most recent change is an entirely new design for the photo viewer ✨! It now shows more information and is made to be extensible so we can easily add requested features to it.

@gwenn It's quite a messy situation to be honest. Most Android TV boxes are relabled China devices, such as the Nokia and Thomson boxes (same company selling those). You still find China telemetry components in the OS. Default Android TV launcher is full of ads but can be replaced by alternatives.

There doesn't seem to be a proper FOSS alternative though. Updates for the OS are rare, if you get any at all. Most boxes available China devices full of bloat. Oh an a Google account was mandatory on my Nokia 8000 for the initial setup. Could be removed afterwards. 🤷

I still seek a clean, well working alternative device. Seems to be super hard, already searched the #Jellyfin forum for recommendations but I haven't seen a good fit for this yet.

Sigh, maybe it's just for the best to completely ignore #AndroidTV and go for #LibreELEC with the Jellyfin plugin for #Kodi or the Jellyfin web UI or Linux app. Scaling at high resolutions seems to be messy though...

Wenn ich heute noch Zeit haben sollte, dann werde ich meinen #Raspberry 3 mal mit #AndroidTV bespielen. Da erwarte ich, dass das problemloser läuft als #Kodi.
Da bekomme ich dann hoffentlich die gängigen Mediatheken, Netflix, YouTube und englisches TV problemlos(er) ans Laufen.

I have an amazing setup at home with Jellyfin and other self-hosted apps.

Now I'd like to get away from Roku and I think the easiest way to do that would likely be an unGoogled Android TV box.

Does anyone know of an UnGoogled Android TV box?

If not, any suggestions for an out of the box TV setup that will let me run Android or Roku without the spyware and ads?

Note that I don't want to build the hardware myself (been there, done that in my 20s), and I don't want to run plain Linux and use a web browser. I want to run apps (likely Android apps) on the TV using an out of the box remote, and connect to my Jellyfin and other home services).

The past years of development on @jellyfin for #AndroidTV focused on modernizing code to increase maintainability and stability. Because of that I've now been able to make more visible changes. 👏

The next major release (version 0.19.0) will have a completely redesigned top bar and an entirely new search screen, with voice-search! 🎤

The navigation on top is not in the final state yet, it will be enhanced over time. I'm just not sure if that will be in 0.19 yet 🙈.
