"Allegro from Sonata No. 4 (Sonata of the Summer)," Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis, 1908.

Lithuanian composer/painter Čiurlionis (1875-1911) combines his two arts in this painting. The central theme is introduced at the top, with variations on the theme running here and there to the bottom, where it's recreated but slightly different. And here and there you can spot the initials MKC (the artist's initials, and mine too) and SK (his fiancee's initials). This was painting during their courtship; they married in 1909 but while in a health resort recovering from burnout and other mental health troubles, he caught pneumonia and died in 1911.

This is very orientalist, in that it imitates Chinese scroll paintings to a great degree.

A Symbolist painting. At the bottom of the picture there is an island with green mountains. The mountains are connected by bridges with the initials SK (Sofija Kymantaitė - M. K. Čiurlionis's fiancée at the time, and later his wife) painted on them. On one of the mountains stands a cathedral in classicistic style. Next to the mountains, to the left, are altars with fires burning. On the lower right side of the painting is an altar with smoke billowing out of it and the initials of MKČ painted on it. Beyond the island, in the water we see many small boats and other islets with trees and altars. The outermost island seems to replicate the lower island, with a cathedral on a hill and a bridge connecting the hilltops.
