Here’s some #arcadeGame #nostalgia for you. In 1978, Kasco, a Japanese arcade game maker, released “The Driver”, a driving game where the player is required to make inputs into a steering wheel to “drive” a car on screen to chase a red car.

But instead of a player-controlled car, the game uses a loop of 16 mm film, containing live-recorded footage. At the bottom of the frame, hidden from the player, is a white/black bar that represents the optimal steering input for that moment in the film. If the player deviates too much from the prescribed input for too long, the game is over.

This is a 4K scan of that film. While it’s obviously sped up, there is some really cool stunt driving going on!

On the day the #Maxell blank #cassettes arrived I tried to see if if the new-to-me #Pioneer CT-300 #cassette player from the #80s still records fine.
It's going to need some work. The seller sadly somewhat "oversold" its working condition. Fortunately it's fairly easy to find replacement belts, I just need to wait a bit.

Photo showing the audio corner in my home office, with an Audio Technica record player (model AT-LPW40WN) standing atop a Pioneer 80s HiFi cassette player (model CT-300), with Stax Headphones (or "ear speakers," as the company likes to call them) with accompanying amplifier (models SR-404 and SRM-006t, respectively). To the side of the cassette player is a stack of five blank cassette tape cases, four of which are still shrink wrapped. The fifth is currently in the player, which has a small red light on indicating it is currently recording. Further to the left of the blank cassettes the "Midnights" LP album by Taylor Swift is laying, right in front of a candle light that is turned on. On the wall behind all this a metal wireframe on which a handful of photos are attached. Most every photo is of Yamgom, our black chow-chow mix dog in various poses and wearing various accessories. The overall mood of the photo gives me a sort of 90s nostalgic vibe, in large part due to the prevalence of physical objects that in the modern day more often than have become fully digital (photos, music).
