In the '80s, when I was a kid, in my little Greek town of 2k ppl, only one kid had a computer (an #Amiga). I was so jealous.

I had to wait until Dec 1994 to be able to afford a computer myself, at the last year of college: a 486 DX/40 with 4 MB of RAM, a 420 MB hdd, and a Cirrus Logic gfx card. I had to quickly upgrade it to 16 MB RAM a few months later to be able to run Win95. (Interestingly, #Linux needed about 32 MB of RAM at the time to run X11).

Watching NCIS last night and laughing at the stupidity. They needed secret access to a woman's computer, so went to her office.

The plan was, Ellie would ask to use the restroom and would then use a USB drive to "download the contents of her hard drive".

1) How would she get access to the computer?
2) Entire hard drive downloaded to a USB drive?
3) Done in the space of a toilet visit, 10 minutes??

There is no reality in these shows.

At Old Town Elementary we had a computer in our classroom. An Apple IIe with a few games. We rotated who got to play. It was only games. Pedagogy wouldn't think computers for years. So we played things like "In Search of the Most Amazing Thing." Where a weird "Uncle Smoke" gave you items to sell to aliens. Then you headed out to search. But it seemed we possibly needed a joystick. Or at least an instruction manual. Because we could never stop to explore. Our floating swamp buggy just kept going. Passing every item. Amazing or not. That's how things worked back then. But it was educational. Computers only sort of work. What more do you need to know? #80s #computers #games

I found a *local* computer store that can assemble a custom laptop for me OUT OF REFURBISHED PARTS.

It's perfect. I'm not telling anyone to manufacture more computers. I'm telling the used market: you rock, keep it up.

And I get an OLED display.

(I'm fairly certain they took me more seriously when I said was going to be put Linux on it, so pro tip?)

❤️
