I always forget how long we stretch out the winter biking season. The packed snow may turn to ice, but it's often covered in twigs, needles, dirt, and frozen tracks and not really slippery at all. And as that melts we're left with frozen dirt in these early, below freezing mornings.

When there’s a stream there’s a good chance that the ice will get much worse at the end of the season, the thaw/freeze cycle causes it to start running but there’s ice blocking it from flowing and the ice backs up. Here we see a big expanse of ice where normally there’s a rock bridge with a little bit of water flowing underneath. No evidence of the bridge right now, it’s covered by a foot or more of ice

Got a message about a 9am ride and couldn't pass it up. Eleven of us on a variety of winter single track conditions: post-holed, icy, lots of smooth packed snow, and even a tiny bit of slush. A week of warm temperatures coming up so we're squeezing the last drop out of fat biking season.

The steep part of a long climb got even trickier as it turned into ice on the last pitch. A queue of mt bikers riding or walking up.
fun winter feature, this gully which is usually very rocky and rooty, tricky either direction, is now mostly smoothed out and you only have to worry about a rut or patch of ice. Biker has made it down the rock face, across bridge, and is now putting down some power to get up the opposite side with an eye on the line

It was 8F/-13C when I packed car to go for a fat bike ride, figuring it would warm a little by the time I got there. 12° seems to be what it settled on, according to the Garmin. Yesterday it almost hit 50°, then rained hard and snowed hard. Riding in the woods you can't even tell, snow is still deep and trails are frozen solid.

nicely groomed trail (from few days ago) well away from foot traffic so it’s still solid and smooth, with a fresh layer of snow on top
when it warms/rains enough then all of the snow freezes solid and you can ride on top almost everywhere. Here’s a section of woods I tried that on, barely denting the surface…
Until about 10ft later when all I did was break through. Too much work to try and forge on, so I turned around and followed my rut back to main trail.

Fat biking through the Rockies with an amazing crew, soaking in the fresh air and epic views. Nothing beats the feeling of rolling through snow with good friends and big tires!
