"Prairie Haunts" - Taken at the Sand Creek Massacre Memorial in southeastern #Colorado last summer. (More info about that event: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sand_Cre.)

Despite, or perhaps because of, the hundred-degree temperature on that day, the area was remarkably still and peaceful.

Out of the photos taken there, this fairly generic one of a landscape with looming clouds is the one that stuck in my mind, and that I feel best captures the feel of the place.

Weathered stones, overgrown with vines, tell a story of transience. The once ornate facade bears the marks of time, while the relief of a contemplative face seems to watch over the decay. Nature and history merge—a silent dialogue between life and death. The stillness of the cemetery is broken only by the rustling of the wind in the bare branches.

Verwitterte Steine, überwuchert von Ranken, erzählen von Vergänglichkeit. Die einst kunstvolle Fassade ist vom Zahn der Zeit gezeichnet, während das Relief eines nachdenklichen Gesichts über den Verfall zu wachen scheint. Natur und Geschichte verschmelzen – ein stiller Dialog zwischen Leben und Tod. Die Stille des Friedhofs wird nur vom Rascheln des Windes in den kahlen Ästen durchbrochen.
