Heute vor 20 Jahren habe ich über den Marktauftritt des dänischen #MVNO #EasyMobile in #UK berichtet:
EasyMobile in Großbritannien gestartet
https://www.heise.de/news/EasyMobile-in-Grossbritannien-gestartet-143078.html
#Mobilfunk wurde #billiger.
#TDC
@torproject same with #obfs4 bridges: there is no option to say like ports=80,443
or similar, which makes it cumbersome to get said bridges.
And trying to get places to #DontBlockTor that criminalize the use of #Tor is foolish at best.
@snep espechally on mobile!
OFC it won't make shit go faster, but more reliable.
In fact, Tor makes #throttled connections bearable for me for >15 years, as even back in 2008 one couldn't just get "unlimited data", espechally not as an individual (school child) without income or wealth!
@seabikeblog Plus it obviously has a huge #NetworkEffect, which I know from #AldiTalk:
Issues aside it's now 15 years since I started using #Tor / @torproject & @guardianproject / #Orbot on #Android full-time.
Because in #EDGEland they yeet users to 64kBit/s if not even lower to 16kBit/s past paid bandwith and instead of properly renegotiating the bandwith, they trottle connections by reducing the packet rate / dropping packets, making it as #laggy as a #GSO-based #SATCOM connection!
@Germo The problem I have is that #eSIM restricts my #FreedomOfChoice re: #Devices.
Same with #eSIM: I can put that on a #SIM #Card *but I can't swap the soldered-down #Chip!
And yes, I routinely use #eSIMcards because I get the #freedom and #flexibility of choice, because it's noone's business which #device I use Which #plans on!
Plus many plans I want to use and/or help people to setup are #SIMonly and not available as #eSIM (i.e. #netzclub)...
I dare you to try to deploy an #eSIM on a #2Gonly #StupidPhone whereas a regular SIM can just be chugged in!
@forceofhabit yeah, blocking #CGNAT address ranges is a good thing.
Also thanks for reminding me to never set foot into Belgium again, cuz that sounds like a facist policestate!
Hey there are worse ideas than starting a #MVNO on a Monday
any #recommendations for a US #cellular #MVNO plan? I'm on #Mint right now but their new international plans suck and I wasn't able to get any help from a human when I needed it, so I'm moving before my renewal in a few days; thoughts? I was on #Ting forever before that but they are no longer price competitive last time I checked...

Cheapest Possible eSIM in the UK
https://shkspr.mobi/blog/2024/03/cheapest-possible-esim/
After railing against eSIM-only phones for over a decade, I've finally succumbed. It appears impossible to buy a modern phone without them. Thankfully, most seem to be dual-SIM. So I can have a regular SIM card and an eSIM.
I find dual-SIM phones handy. I have a disposable number which I give out to people who don't need my main number. And when I go abroad, it's useful to have a local SIM. When I'm at home, I like my 2nd SIM to be used as a backup in case I'm somewhere with no signal on my primary line.
So, what's the cheapest eSIM in the UK?
I think it is Spusu - an MVNO on the EE network. 1GB, Unlimited Minutes, Unlimited SMS for... £2.90 per month!
Not bad! It offers 5G, VoLTE, WiFi Calling and EU roaming. If you spend most of your day on WiFi, it's a great offer. The contract is flexible, so you can cancel it at any time.
There are a few others to consider.
Lyca - another EE MVNO - have a special offer of £1.29 per month but that's only for the first 3 months. After that it jumps to £5.90. It should be possible to cancel after the first few months, but that's a bit of hassle.
GiffGaff are an O2 MVNO. They offer a free SIM, which you can convert to an eSIM. That will get you a number which supports incoming calls and texts - but you won't be able to make calls, send texts, or use data. Their cheapest monthly plan is £6. Or you can go pure PAYG and pay 25p/min for calls, 10p per text, and 25p per MB. Ouch!
Three will also give you a free eSIM. At PAYG rates, you'll pay 35p/min, 15p/text, 10p/MB.
If you want a data-only backup eSIM, I think the cheapest is £6.50 for 30 days with 3GB from Nomad. It is designed for tourists - and will roam onto all the major UK networks. No calls or texts, but handy if you need emergency data.
Those are the cheapest deals I could find. If you think you know of something cheaper - shove a link in the comments.

@dsfgs @torproject it's by the #MVNO, and they do it very ugly by not negotiating a lower #LinkRate (which would make sense given the actual claims why they trottle people down) but just limiting packet rate and dropping shit that would exceed the bandwith.
Resulting in #SlowStart issues...
But this seems almost like connections get reset.
