I’ve been working on a #freebsd from scratch blog post series and was going to skip right over Xorg (preferring #wayland and #sway)…and then I heard about #NSCDE - a reimplementation of #Solaris #CDE look-and-feel via #fvwm
Thanks to work by Christian Moerz, it was a snap. Literally `pkg install Xorg nscde` a change to my .xinitrc and I was up in a pastel bliss again. Run #interlisp on it is a beautiful joy.
I was so impressed AND I got to avoid s security holes and bit rot— so I sent some librepay love. It’s a great project!
Un viernecito de escritorio para los fans de Unix y el CDE. Dell Precision 530MT (2001Q3), procesadores 2x Intel Xeon 2.8GHz (2002Q3) puros de 32-bits, 2GB RDRAM, nVidia GeForce FX5500, 2x250GB Hitachi Cinemastar 7200 RPM IDE HDD #cde #unix #nscde #slackware #viernesdeescritorio #gnu #linux
After a lot of overthinking (my specialty...), I settled on this setup for the #oldcomputerchallenge ... My regular laptop (a 2014 macbook air running essentially arch Linux) slowed down to one core and 512mb ram with the #NsCDE desktop for the retro feel, and music out of either a #discman or an #iPod 4th gen
#NsCDE
I really missed this desktop look.. Brings me back to my SUN days... and AIX.. and...
@docscream @survey: Indeed, #CDE (used it on #Solaris in the '90s) looks similar to #FVWM (or probably rather vice versa), but the usability of #FVWM (used it for 15 years before switching to #Ratpoison and #AwesomeWM and later #i3) is not comparable to #CDE IMHO.
Never heard of #NsCDE (Not so Common Desktop Environment; https://github.com/NsCDE/NsCDE) before, though. Thanks for making me aware of it!
