I've just published a new page on my website documenting the last 3 months on an art residency exploring fire through the plant aiteann (gorse) and its relationship to sitka spruce: https://shanefinan.org/VAP/15_aiteann.html

This was part of the international research project investigating wildfires called FIRECULT. For the project, I created charcoal and made new drawings, made work with fire, and created two new video artworks.

Gorse is flowering. Wafts of coconut. Honey bees already looking into it.

A riot of bright yellow gorse blooms close-up in the foreground two thirds of the portrait framing, focus sharper towards us, against a blue sky behind. A honey bee with pollen clumps on it's legs is mid-air with its head inside one of the flowers. For those with smellivision, you can probably smell the wafts of coconut aroma.

A former Invercargill councillor has a large gorse farm on a section she owns. She's been ordered to remedy the problem but she's intent on fighting the Council. Lord knows why.

Regardless of her motives, this is an awful thing to do to your neighbours and the greater neighbourhood.

Until you join a #path or #bridleway, you have to negotiate #gorse which, if you’re not careful, could easily mean a twisted ankle. However, the wild #flowers are very colourful. You can also see part of #FernworthyForest in the background, which is where we were headed.

The village of Lochcarron, lined up along the north-western shore of Loch Carron in Wester Ross.
